Apple Eyes – The technique

Just a few months ago I had a project for a class in school that required me to come up with something to advertise Droid and Apple in a creative way.  I could use graphic design/photo/anything that I am good at. Well….this was a struggle because I wanted to come up with something very unique.  With the help of my favorite make-up artist Rachael Blank and some awesome models, we came up with some ideas.  I just wanted to share the creativity behind this shoot because it was such an interesting task!

I decided I ultimately wanted to get the model’s eyes to reflect the Apple logo.  I thought….Photoshopping it would be the easiest way to accomplish this, however, I wanted it to be real.  Instead, I decided to try to find a way to get the lighting to reflect this shape.  After much experimentation, I found a way to make it work.  I found an old box, I flattened it out, I traced the logo onto the cardboard, and then I used a box cutter to cut the shape out.  One of the ladies here with me was kind enough to hold the cardboard over the softbox for me, and as I put the softbox very close to the model, I noticed it was working.

There was definitely a reflection showing up in her eyes, but it was difficult to accomplish this perfectly.  She then put her sunglasses on…….and then it hit me…..this will work WAY better than it just shining in her eyeball!  The reflection off of her sunglasses made such a huge difference it was incredible!  I was so excited about this.  It goes to show that a little bit of creative thinking….can go a long way.

Check out the images below!

This is the cardboard cutout I used on the softbox

This was the original concept being put to work……

This sunglass image below was the final product.  I made some corrections to her skin and I made the sunglasses darker in order to hide any of her face that was visible through the glasses.  Otherwise, the reflection seen her is basically what was SOOC.
